Track Season Spring 2024
We had such a beautiful end to winter with 70 degree days in February….then track season started and so did the rain. Ellie was really on the fence about even running this year but a new pair of shoes was all it took to convince her to finish middle school by participating. Practices were not her favorite, shin splints didn’t help, missed meets due to rain cancelations and a fever and she dreaded being put in the 400M — all reasons on the cons side of the list. But once she exploded through her first 100M race, she remembered that she did like doing track. It was great to see Ellie back in her element, loving the social aspect of being on the track team. As an 8th grader she made a point to make sure the 6th graders felt welcome. Overall, her dedication to the team this season prevailed!

Wait, what? What just happened here? Track was over. She turned in her uniform and warm ups. Middle school ended. We were packing for camp and just when we thought summer had started, she was pulled back in. It turns out that the Girls 4x100m team that made it to state needed an alternate and Coaches thought Ellie would be a great fill in. She was super stoked and so excited to be doing something she had never done before. She even got her name on the state qualifiers shirt. So what do you do? Well you cancel appointments, schedule the dogs at the kennel, shift your camping reservations, and get your butt on the road to the State Track Meet.
All of the excitement and thought of actually maybe running at state gave her lots of mixed emotions. It even turns out that she was in her spikes, number bib on her jersey, standing in the chute with the team, gearing up to run when at the last minute the starter made it over from the long jump and took to the track, relieving Ellie of her duties. The team ran a great race, but unfortunately they didn’t make it to the finals on Saturday. Ellie chose to stay and support the team, take in the whole state experience, and we headed home the next day.
Lacking the desire to run, shin splints and meet cancelations made this year less than desirable. Ellie still made the most of it and enjoyed being a part of a team. Going to state was just the icing on the cake. It was the best way to end the track season and her Middle School season of life. It has also already, without a doubt, solidified running again next year as a Freshman. And you can bet we will be there cheering her on and taking pictures of every meter she runs!
