Our Little Fashion Designer
Today was Ellie’s first Career Day. Our conversation started this week by asking what she wanted to dress up as, to which she promptly stated that she wanted to go as Elsa from the movie Frozen. You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to explain the concept of work and a job to a four year old when you are a stay-at-work-from-home mom. Trust me, the thought of sending her with a laptop and in slippers, yoga pants and a t-shirt complete with drool on the shoulder had crossed my mind. Brian even chimed in with regards to the desire to be Elsa and said that, yes indeed, there are people who go to work at Disneyland who dress up as Elsa. While we plan to encourage our children to follow their dreams, and it would be fun to think of Ellie bringing smiles to so many faces as a princess at a Disney park, somehow I just didn’t feel that is quite what her preschool teachers had in mind.
So the conversation continued and it came out that she really liked the dress Elsa wears and she could be a dressmaker — so I ran with it. Turns out being a dressmaker is pretty close to having sewing as a hobby so I didn’t have to look far for the details like a measuring tape and pins. Which is good because in my mind I was panicking that we didn’t have any doctor or firefighter costumes to pull out.
And there you have it. Ellie was transformed into a Fashion Designer and dressmaker overnight. And what Fashion Designer wouldn’t be without a fashion of her own, measuring tape, pins (safety pins of course), red handled scissors for fabric cutting (just like mom’s – don’t worry, I made them out of cardboard), and a sketch book of fashion designs.
I’m not going to lie, but I could totally see this being her world someday — and — it looks pretty good on her.
