Ellie’s Frozen 4th Birthday
Brian kindly insisted that we not choose a party theme so early this year as it seemed that Ellie would change her mind quite often, but when the idea came up that she could have a Frozen party when she turned four, there was no letting it go (sorry, I couldn’t resist). Ellie and I were soon busy making paper snowflakes and planning the rest of the party.
Call it fate, luck or a crazy roll of the dice, but we had to offer a rain check for the first scheduled party on Saturday, June 14th, due to another ‘birth’ day. Ellie was pretty confused that none of her friends were coming for her party until Brian was able to make it home for a few moments to tell her that she was finally a big sister. We are very grateful that Aunt Jessica, Grandma Nancy and Grandma Mary were here to make sure she had a bit of a party by decorating some cupcakes and opening a few presents. And as promised, we had her friends over the following weekend.
We were shooting to have a larger pool and more industrial slip-n-slide this year so we of course had to test them out before the big day. Following Google’s advice of adding dish soap to contractors plastic only produced a swim suit full of bubbles for us and not much more slip but the new pool was a hit.
The Party Details
As with all of her birthday parties thus far, this one also started with planning well in advance and then the invites were first to follow to help set the theme of each party.
I just happened to find this smocking fabric on sale and thought it would make a perfect birthday dress — quick and easy. I’ve only made Ellie one other dress out of smocked fabric so I had a bit of an idea of how easy it could be. I just didn’t care for the lack of “twirl” it had so I hacked and added some triangle pieces which added an interesting hem line that I left.
Since the Cinderella Cupcakes were such a big hit last year, I decided that is my birthday cake recipe of choice and tried to replicate them again this year. Except I forgot how much batter to put in the cups and I filled them too full resulting in no room for the ice cream layer. I wasn’t too worried about it because I had already pipped 40 white chocolate snowflakes and knew they would still turn out great. I also thought it would be easy to find a Frozen figurine of some sort to help adorn the cake since that is what Ellie saw and liked on Pinterest and the shelves were overflowing with them only six short months ago before the holidays. It turns out that everyone else loves Elsa too and I came up short, resulting in a paper stand in, which worked just great.
Since we once again invited everyone to splash around outside, the only activity I planned inside was ‘pin the nose on Olaf’. It was a big hit and fun to see where all of the carrots ended up.
We were a bit sad that the weather wasn’t nice enough to get the pool and slip-n-slide out this year. The kiddo’s didn’t seem to mind as they were busy playing the new games that were just opened. You’ll see in the picture gallery that even the adults got in on a little puzzle action.
In keeping with the theme, Ellie and I made these goodie bags filled with Hershey chocolates and sent everyone home with some ‘hugs’.
Even her new brother got in on the party fun with an Olaf shirt that I whipped up for him. I don’t think he would have had any problems getting warm hugs without the shirt though.

It has amazed us at how much our Ellie Marie has grown up, almost in a matter of days. She loves to cuddle, wrestle, color, cut, sing, dance, paint, bike, swim, tickle and play her days away — everything a four year old should love. As parents of a growing family we probably seemed a bit dazed but we enjoyed celebrating another year with everyone and want to say thank you for all the shower of gifts that she received for her fourth birthday.
