Lovin’ Island Life

When we think of it, it has been a long time since just Brian and I were able to sneak away, and even longer for Dusty and Kate, so this Bahamian vacation was exactly what we all needed, a chance to get away and rest.

It never seems that your first night on vacation is one to remember, unless they don’t have any more king suites available by the time you get to the hotel and you are all sleeping in separate beds, or in Dusty’s case, in the crack between the twin beds. All was rectified the next day as we sat on the beach, sipped on some island juice, settled into different rooms, and made multiple trips through the buffet line.

Kate, did you put sunscreen on?

Our fist day on the beach was great. We swam in the waves, saw some fish go by, and soaked up some sun – a lot of sun – maybe too much sun for some. After lunch we all took naps and then met for dinner. (Exciting huh?) We took in the resorts nightly entertainment and then we took a long walk on the beach where we came across some unusual tracks in the sand. They appeared to look like bicycle tracks until we got to the end of one that was crowded by bird tracks. Of course the hunter with us made sure that we tracked them until we finally discovered that they were hermit crab tracks.

Our night tracking led us to these little guys.

A few days later we found out that the Bahamas were celebrating their 40th Independence Day so we were able to take in a spectacular fireworks display as they were being shot off of a barge and reflecting over the ocean just out past the point where our resort was. It was great to see the excitement from the locals who were all waiting for their big party at midnight. Needless to say, the staff was a little on the quiet side the next day. The rest of the week included a lot of sitting on the beach and swimming in the ocean. Of course there were more island drinks and food throughout.

On our last full day we decided to venture out and went down the island for a sea kayaking and snorkeling adventure. It was fantastic to climb in the kayaks and paddle to another small island about a mile away. The water was so clear that it didn’t look that deep and we were even able to see a sea turtle swim by. After we paddled back we strapped on some snorkel gear and took in the sights under the water. Even Kate gave it a try!

A snorkeling we go.

And then we had to pack our bags for our return flight which took us through Atlanta — the busiest airport ever — during a thunderstorm, which meant we had to run to catch our connection in Minneapolis and were very grateful that we were able to make it back home on the same day.
