Lefse Rollin’ 2011
This year was our THIRD Annual Lefse weekend!!! And just as the previous years, if you wanted some of Grandma Myrna’s Lefse you had to come and help puff flour into all of the nooks and crannies of Doug and Robin’s garage. Don’t worry, there were a few of us who made sure to track some flour into the house.
Last year we did three batches, and it took all day to roll and grill. This year we aimed a little higher and whipped up four batches and only ended up with two dozen more then last year — it still might not be enough. We were not quite certain if it was because we had more hands on deck to help out or if it was because we are becoming seasoned lefse makers, but we had three griddles fired up by 8:00 am and much to our surprise we were done and cleaned up by 3:00 pm. We didn’t even have to call Darcy to talk us through it this year.
Major contributors this year included Robin, Doreen, Jessica, Donnie, Kate, and Brandi. Thanks to Dusty for the excellent goose steak dinner Friday night and Doreen for the warm and tasty Everything Chili Stew for lunch while we were rolling.
Our tradition of sharing memories of Myrna included a story behind Grandma’s sewing machine, which has recently been handed down to me. When going through the drawers I found what I believe to be the original sales receipt as well as every receipt from when she took it in to be serviced. The whole desk is chalked full of her memories.
When Dusty was a little boy, perhaps around one year old, for some reason Grandma Myrna’s finger was in his mouth and Dusty bit down on her finger. She then promptly withdrew her finger and slapped him on the mouth which surprised Doreen. Myrna’s response was “Well he shouldn’t have bit my finger”, and Doreen thought that maybe her finger shouldn’t have been in there in the first place.
We didn’t set a date in stone for next year, but it seems like the third weekend in October is working so far if you want to pencil it in for 2012. Here are a few of the pictures from our wonderful weekend of fellowship and memories.
