Camping at the Tower

We were bold enough to pack up our sleeping bags and camp stove and camp at the foot of Devil’s Tower over Memorial Day weekend. And yes we knew the weather would be cold and wet, but we went camping anyways.

Dusty, Kate, Bevin and Reese also joined us with their new camper for it’s maiden camping trip. The first night went well as we set up and Kate threw on her awesome EVERYTHING chili stew. The boys found the mud and Ellie camped out in her pea-pod in the cabin we rented while we all sat by the camp fire and made s’mores. It was pretty cool to be sitting at a campfire and you look over your shoulder and see this massive rock formation towering over you.

We ate breakfast in the cafe at the campground both mornings; the first morning because it was raining and the second morning because I had forgotten to bring eggs. (It was really our first camping trip.) One of the neatest things was that there was a robin’s nest on the light above our cabin door. She would swoop in and feed her little chicks about every ten minutes. We didn’t let the weather get us down and we packed up and headed to big ‘ol town of Hulet and ate some pretty darn good pizza.

For being our first camping experience as a family, with out the tent and motorcycles, we think we did pretty well, even in cold and rainy weather.
